Why do pictures accompany text? How can we provoke students to utilize additional skills such as visualization and inference to make connections by examining the photo? This strategy provides the class a moment to collaborate and think “what could this picture represent and does it match the text on the page? What additional labels, describing words or captions could be added? And finally, can the students apply the knowledge they have already learned to the image(s) and say more? This strategy allows the student to move beyond understanding and begin applying and synthesizing scientific vocabulary.

However, explicitly teaching this strategy provides the students with an opportunity to explore language. The first step is to identify what is happening (background), next, the student should identify how it is being used and finally, determine what it might mean. If, the definition fits the context (step one), the reading can commence.
