Fossils are essential to help explain the species of the past and how they lived and have evolved over time. The only thing that gives direct proof to what existed in the past are fossils as they are the physical remains, in rock form, of what existed. Today's technology for scientists is in fact so advanced that they can tell what certain species ate, how long they lived, and obviously what they looked like. This helps when talking about biological evolution because it gives scientists physical proof of what species existed in the beginning of time then how those species evolved to become what exists today. They can look at the remains of similar animals in different time periods and see what adaptations those species acquired to better live
