To begin, while it is clear that the US in particular won in the Cold War, it is very unclear what we actually won other than the collapse of the Soviet Union. As we have demonstrated in past weeks, the outcome of the war boiled down to a matter of economic might vs military might. The Soviet Union, while militarily sound, was unable to compete with the cost of war and inevitably collapsed. However, following the war, it is apparent that we have suffered substantial losses as well. For example, economically, we have never fully recovered debt wise and culturally we are divided. I personally believe that these problems all began during the Cold War. Rather than addressing domestic concerns, such as drug control, job security, and domestic budgeting concerns, an annual estimate of $298.5 Billion was spent on the war. To conclude, in my humble opinion, more was lost than gained in the Cold War. While we technically won, what did the U.S. really win? Russia is more financially stable and they have an equal amount of nuclear weapons as before and still possess the same level of threat. I believe that in addition to compromising our economy, drawing attention away from domestic concerns, such as the outsourcing of jobs, substance abuse and the falling of cities.
