With the discovery of North America, European countries realized they could benefit from the colonization and resources of this new land. Spain, France and England each had their own reasons why they wanted to colonize North America, and each countries strategy to do this was different from the others. England had a big advantage when it came to the colonization of North America; even though, this advantage led to the American Revolutionary War and the creation of The United States of America.

The Spanish arrived in North America primarily with soldiers and missionaries (mostly men). This helped conquer the native Indian populations, but in doing so caused a very bad relationship with the local population. The Spanish were dependent upon the native Indians for food and other needs. Traders merchants and missionaries were the primary immigrants of the French (mostly men). French colonies relied heavily of their relationship with the Indian population for fur trading. Neither the Spanish or the French had a diverse population of farmers, tradesman and businessmen as their primary immigrants to North America as did the English. This diversity in the English population along with the fact there were more woman made the English colonies more self sufficient.
