Why Are Lab Credits Not Equivalent To Hours

Improved Essays
My friend and I are both enrolled in 5 classes this semester. Two of my classes require me to take a 3-hour lab with them. My friend has no classes that require him to take labs. Oddly, I am only receiving 2 more credits than my friend, even though, I am taking 6 more hours of class than he is. That is not even counting preparation time for the labs either. To make this very clear, what I am saying is that the students that are in labs are doing a lot more work and not being rewarded for it. One would think that doing that extra work would possibly get us closer to graduating, but it does no such thing. So why are lab credits not equivalent to hours? Colleges will tell you that we are receiving a justifiable amount of credits for labs, but according to the logic of how credits are assigned, we are not receiving the fair amount of credits. We need to address this issue before it continues to spiral out of control. …show more content…
The general rule or idea is that for every hour in a class, you spend 2 hours outside on that class. That is where they come up with a 3 credit class. I asked Dr. Dwayne Bajema, an Agricultural professor here at Dordt, how labs were assigned credits. He finished by saying that “if a lab goes for 2 hours, you then have that extra hour to do a lab report or any extra work, and that would then constitute 1 credit.” That is where the school comes up with a course with a lab being assigned 4

The one size fits it all clothing saying is also being applied to our children’s education. In Freemont High School by Jonathan Kozol, students are having trouble with school instead of enjoying it like most children should be enjoying their high school. Students are having obstacles to continuing their education by complaining that there is no air conditioning in classes, not enough courses, restrooms being closed, substitute teachers, and the library being occupied. In the passage “some of the classrooms ‘do not have air conditioning,’ so that the students ‘become red-faced and unable to concentrate’ during the extreme heat of summer’’…

The topic of the article explains it all, “How Grading Reform Changed”, this article discusses just that. According to Erickson, he suggests that grading reforms at Minnetonka High School led to a change in the way the school system worked. It fundamentally altered how teachers graded, and how students approached their learning. What automatically catches my attention is the example the author gave in relation to the topic.…

Upon reading the grading polices for this class I understand the guidelines and expectations as follows: I understand that the instructor, Mr. Fanning does not round grades upward, therefore I will strive to achieve the highest grade possible on my assignments, so that this policy will not hurt my overall grade. I understand that Mr. Fanning, does not create extra credit assignments, that being said, I will not ask Mr. Fanning for extra credit, and I will ensure that there will be no need to ask him, as my grade will be high enough to the point where extra credit is unnecessary. I understand that the due dates for assignments are final, and that work turned in late will not be accepted by Mr. Fanning. Because of this policy I will ensure that I turn in my assignments early, and not wait until the deadline to actually turn the…
