In Moses day being the first born of Egypt on two different occasions meant you could be killed, Pharaoh killed the entire Jewish nations first born and then later God killed the Egyptians fist born as they left. Herod in the New Testament sent out a decree to have all the first born killed in the land.

Saul was a man who won battles on the field as he defeated the Philistines and others who came against then Jewish Nation.
Being a mighty leader and warrior did Saul no good as he lay down at night to sleep and rest. Only to confront the inward battles that he fought from within, yet could not win, battles that he now faced by himself and alone without any weapons. Fires that burned inside only never to burn out.
