Reverend Parris is the one person that was in the woods and saw them dancing, yet he didn't say anything to anyone about it because he was so selfish that he didn't care enough about his daughter to put her first in front of his position at the church. “ Abigail, I cannot go before the congregation when I know you have not been open with me. What did you do with her in the forest? “ ( Miller Act 1). Abigail admits that she is not bewitched “We did dance, Uncle, and when you leaped out of the bush so suddenly, Betty was frightened, and then she fainted. Therefore, the next step in exonerating herself was to accuse others of being witches, thus shifting the burden of shame and guilt from her shoulders to those she falsely blames. Desiring Superiority Throughout history many examples have been shown of demolishing others to gain that desired feeling of being superior. In Margaret Atwood’s interview with Bill Moyer she hits the nail of scapegoating right on the head. Adolf Hitler blamed the Jews, the KKK blamed African-Americans, and when terrorism strikes the first blame is always placed on the Middle Easterns.
