The Seven Stars Temple Remains locates 30 km southwest of Karasahr County and sits at the east foot of Mount Huola (霍拉山). The site was populated during the 7th and 8th century as part of the Karasahr Country (焉耆国), among the remains of which discovered several sculptures. This damaged artifact collected at the Seven Stars Remains was portrayed with a plump face, long and slim eye, and a subtle smile which indicate the classical Bodhisattva image of the Western Regions (西域). The Bodhisattva gazes slightly to the right, showing a vividly portrayed solemn look. The hair appears in a tall bun decorated with flowers and the hands posit in front of the chest performing the Anjali Mudra (合十). Functioning as the crucial pathway of Ancient Rome, Iran and China, Xinjiang also links the cultural exchange between China and India. The Buddhist artifacts discovered in Xinjiang rarely came with exact evidence that proves time, which brings difficulty to the creation of a chronology. Buddhism prevails roughly from 5th century to the 9th century in the surrounding areas including the Gandhara regions (犍陀罗), Central India, Iran, Han Chinese areas and other small sovereignties, which all brought influence to Xinjiang. Hence, Xinjiang formed into a distinctive Western Regions (西域) style. This clay Buddha head was portrayed with concise style, presenting a plump face, delicately small facial features, and long slim eyes. Drawn with dark ink to emphasize the eyebrows and eyes and red to fill the lips, this figure appears to be in a delightful and tranquil state. Especially with the concentrated facial features in combination with the polished hair and the fleshy protuberance on the crown of the head, the figure shows clear traits of the Western Regions

Several centuries after Siddhartha Gautama, also known as Buddha, died, Buddhism made its emergence into China in the first century CE. Initially, the spread of Buddhism was responded to positively by the people of China and they adopted its ideals. However, as Buddhism continued to expand, the government, specifically of the Tang Dynasty, started to turn against Buddhists and even went as far as to blame them for problems within the state. As a result, the people felt compelled to diverge from Buddhist beliefs and became xenophobic to those who did not abandon those beliefs.…

Evidently, religion, or spiritual life, is a binding element between the ancient civilizations of China and India. Buddhism emerged from a predominantly Hindu society in India when Ashoka seized power. He adjourned all conquer and expansion plans and instead adopted the social and ethical teachings of Buddhism. Many Chinese accepted Buddhism and defended it’s policies while others scrutinized its absence from past texts for political and social problems. However, others remained neutral wishing to meld the aspects of the belief system in china to create a unique Chinese culture. Documents 4 and 6 scrutinize and discourage the spread of Buddhism throughout china while documents 2 and 3 defend and support it. Documents 1 and 5 neither encourage nor discourage the religion’s spread but provide a 3rd perspective on how it should be handled.…

Clothing has the ability to define your personality. Zail uses graphic description in describing how Hanna’s Papa’s “fine linen shirt spoke of his success in business, his spectacles hinted at his love for books… stripped to his underwear he was just another Jew.” This evidently shows the power clothing has in distinguishing your identity. However, when stripped down to a bare minimum, they are perceived with no distinguishing features that express their personality as they all look similar with “drab grey dresses and yellow triangles.” Zail highlights the ripple effect towards a key aspect of the character's charisma being…

Buddhism was a very controversial philosophy in ancient China; many philosophers and scholars had strong views and arguments for or against Buddhism’s principles. Buddhism was founded in India and brought to China around the first century C.E. Buddhism’s influences spread throughout China slowly but gained more followers after the collapse of the Han dynasty in 220 C.E and continued to spread many centuries afterwards, during the empire’s political instability. China’s broken government and loss of unity allowed Buddhism to thrive. The philosophy promised that those who followed the ways of Buddha would rid themselves of their sorrows (doc. 1) and after death would be allowed to enter Nirvana; a state of being in which there is no suffering nor sense of desire for one's self (doc. 2).…
