In 1913, Big Brothers spread into Toronto, Canada where it would begin to help juvenile delinquents. Over the last century the company has been faced with many issues such as depression, the lack of Big Brothers, the unwillingness to help others in need, having inadequate resources, negative pressure from media, and decline in financial support. That person cannot afford to raise their own kids because they have no money for food or clothes. Now, imagine a person that wants to work out, wants an opportunity to make more friends while doing so.…

Kids across the nation are standing out and making a difference. Whether its just picking up around the community or starting a foundation people can make a difference. Many people think kids are just in the way and don’t ever actually make a difference in their community. Blare Gooch started with a teddy bear, Alex Scott started with a cup of lemonade, and Zach Hunter started with a few pennies around his house. The smallest things can turn into a life changing difference.…
Ms. Angela Patton’s work is heartfelt she saw a need and began to advocate for her girls in Camp Diva. One of Ms. Patton’s girl’s by the name of Joy stated during a meeting that she wishes her father would get off her back. Joy felt her father called all the time. Since attending Spelman College, I have evolved as a person mentally and socially, especially in my efforts regarding volunteering and the production of social change. Before attending Spelman and joining Lady Buds, a mentoring program for young underprivileged girls, I understood to a degree, how social change impacts people and their communities. However, after being a part of Lady Buds, my understanding of social change vastly increased, specifically how it affects the communities within Atlanta and on a larger scale our society. Upon entering Spelman college, I knew I wanted to be involved with a mentoring group, and while there was a multitude of groups to choose from, I decided on Lady Buds because their mission statement resonated with my goal before entering Spelman College.…
A hero is defined as someone who is admired for great acts or fine qualities. George Washington said, “My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her” (Nguyen). Tonia Pennington is a hero because she has done so much for others and means the world to many people.…
For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…
After doing tons of reach on the Boys & Girls Club of America I am convinced that this organization is one that goes through lots of training and preparation to get the right people ready to be apart of the legacy they are creating for our future generations. Being a former member and employee of the company I can say from my personal experience this company will do whatever it takes to make sure they have an eye for finding qualified, caring, professionals that love to work with children to help show these kids that someone cares about their future and is willing to invest time and energy on the job to do it. Majority of the Boys & Girls Clubs have all faced a common issue, a lack in the leadership department. Many of the current leaders or seasoned leaders are at a point where retirement is their next step in life and no longer have to work anymore, which has caused a gap in leadership with the new upcoming leaders of the organization.…
I’m a member of the Student Leadership Team at my school. We created a program called Big Eagle, Little Eagle for my high school. The program gives the opportunity for a elementary student to be paired up with a high student. This gives the high school student the opportunity to mentor younger students, who really need an older role model to talk to. The younger students are selected by the counselors as they know who needs the most support.…
Bullying is extremely harmful, intentional, and repetitive act that destroys some people's lives. Victims are impacted by bullying their whole lives. There are many good people in the world like upstanders who make a difference. In New Mexico, football players have helped kids from being bullied in their community. It is important for the victim to have an advocate.…
Two problems that are extremely important to me are the issues of child abuse and professional inequality for minorities. Though they are classified as completely separate, complex topics, I strongly believe each problem needs to be solved. I am blessed to have grown up in a stable household where I was always surrounded by love and support. When I was little, I thought that this was normal. As I grew up and began volunteering with a local non-profit, Sharing and Caring, I was exposed to extremely different family situations.…
