In Batman: The Animated Series (est; 1992), Paul Dini, the creator of the now lovable Harley Quinn, decided Joker needed a more prominent henchman, or maybe even a henchwoman. The inspiration of the character came from one of Paul Dini's dear friend, Arleen Sorkin, in 'Days of Our Lives' where she dressed up in a jester costume and had the voice and look inspiration he needed to make Harley Quinn. When Harley's design was complete and ready to be put into Bruce Timm's cartoon, Arleen Sorkin voiced the character, as she was the inspiration, and Harley's first appearance was in the epsiode 'Joker's Favor'. She came from a semi-decent household, her father went to prison at a young age and couldn't seem to get out of trouble with the law. After completing her schooling and getting a degree she went to work at the Arkham Asylum facility as a psychiatrist. She was an outstanding worker, she worked very well with patients and understood them very well. This is what leads to her downfall. She wanted to evaluate the Joker, she was very curious about him and his past. He used tactics he knew to get her sympathy, making her feel bad for him and his situation. He wooed her, sending her roses and letting her baby him, when he broke out and later came back bruised and beaten by the Batman, she broke down crying. Later that night she broke into a costume store and got her famous black and red harlequin jester suit. She knocked out the guards and blasted the glass he was being held behind. The Joker knew this would be the start of something he could take advantage of, he escaped with her and everything seemed fine for a little while.
