Imagine that you were given a decision, a decision that could Chang your life forever, it could take you from your IQ of 68 and triple it. Would you do it ? In "Flowers for Algernon" by Daniel Keyes, a cognitively impaired man named Charlie Gordon with an IQ of 68 undergoes operation that could Change his life forever by tripling his IQ. Charlie has to make this decision with his unitellgentce mind. He was not told all the side effects of the experiment, he was told that it might be temporary. Charlie undergoes the operation and gained intelligence very quickly. He lost his job because he was freaky. He lost respect for people and got and that affected his social skills in a negative way. After undergoing the operation Charlie was told it was better for him to go back to work in the factory. "Im glad Im going back to work because I miss my job and all my frends and all the fun we have their" [ pg. 316] . Since the workers in the factory taught Charles weir transformation after the operation was ftraky so they all signed a petition to get Charlie fired and everyone signed the petition except for Fanny. " I've quit my job with Mr.Donnegan's Plastic Box Company. Mr.Donnegan insisted that it would be better for all considered if I left. What did I do to make them hate me so?"[pg.328]. The first quote shows how Charlei was glad to be going back to the factory because he likes job and he has fun their with his "friends". Later in the book when the operation had more effect and charlei was getting smarter everyone in the factory got freaked out. After Charlei took the test he was told the next day that they were going to use him. "Their going to use me! Im so exited I can hardly wait."(313). The operation wares of and he lost all of his intellegent that he gained as fast as he gained his intelligence. He goes to Ms.Kinnian's classroom and found that his classmates were gown and their were other people. Ms.Kinnian ran out th classroom crying because she felt bad for Charlei. Charlei knows that what happened to to Algernon, (the rat that the experiment was als done on) was going to happen to him. (Algernon died.) Charlei is also going to develop amnesia. He decides then to move to New York. "Thats why Im going to New York for good. I don't want to do nothing like that agen. I don't want Miss Kinnian to feel sorry for me."(341) The first quote shows that Charlei was really excited that they were going to use him and he was very anxious, and wanted to Change his life positively. In the secon quote he was let down that the operation was inoperative. He regrets doing it and he was very sad and so where others and he didn't want to hurt the people he cared about so he left to New York.
