Whitney Houston reached the prime of her career in 1992, which is also the year she met Bobby Brown who would go on to become her husband and father of her child Bobbi Kristina. Many people assume that Bobbi Brown introduced Houston to cocaine, but many people around her in her career have said she had been using the drug from earlier on in her career. Bobby Brown was also a famous R & B superstar that battled alcohol and drug addiction, his spotlight surrounded issues of altercations of violence with his former group members. In an interview with Oprah, Houston admitted to using cocaine and marijuana when she was filming the movie titled “The Bodyguard” with heavier use after the film was released. Also in an interview with Diane Sawyer Ms. Houston was being questioned about drugs, she admitted to using cocaine, marijuana and pills. Once Sawyer questioned about the use of crack-cocaine, Ms. Houston became offensive thus sighting her famous quote “Crack is cheap. I make too much money to ever smoke crack…We don't do crack. We don't do that. Crack is wack.” (Fisher, 2011) Whitney Houston entered rehab once in 2004 and checked out within a week. She checked back in to a rehab center with her mother’s demands in 2005. Once released she did not do well at staying sober, because in 2007 she and husband Bobby Brown finalized a divorce. He later admitted after her death that it was because she would not stay sober. In previous stated Oprah interview Whitney reported that Brown was abusive towards her; even in front of their child. Whitney Houston continued with her career in music and she was often criticized for her weight being very thin and her voice cackling, which were all rumored to be caused from her drug use. She returned to rehab for a third time in 2011 for alcohol use and to withstand her long term recovery process (Yeginsu, 2012). They experience things that regular people don’t and they need to have a tough skin. Many celebrities become addicted to drugs to escape reality as most people who are addicted to a drug do. The difference is money, access and the overall lifestyle. Being that Whitney Houston started so early in her career there probably were not many people in her environment being sober themselves long enough to get Whitney to stop using drugs. If Whitney had gotten help before she became dependent or when she first became dependent she may have had greater success with sobriety.
