The book starts with a very explicit scene of what occurred on May 2, 1973 on the New Jersey Turnpike. The state troopers pulled the car Assata was in and in a daze unable to do much was only a spectator of her torture as she was pulled out of the car and assaulted by the state troopers. As, Assata is on the pavement within an inch of death, she hears the officers asking if she was dead already. Her torture did not end on the New Jersey Turnpike, in the hospital the cops harassed her not only physically but psychologically. The cops would point a gun at her and pull the trigger.
