Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, tells the story of a small, quiet town in Maycomb, Alabama during the 1930’s of Scout Finch and her brother Jem, along with Atticus Finch. Mr. Finch, the widowed father of Scout and Jem, as well as a local lawyer to the town will stand for what he believes in no matter the struggle. Atticus stands behind those who he thinks are being treated unfairly. Hence, he teaches Scout and Jem what it means to have courage. This novel demonstrates how courage is required when facing a challenge that may seem to go beyond what one may think is impossible because one may never know what they can accomplish without trying.
Throughout the book, many characters show courage. Atticus shows lots of courage when he was at the mob. They wanted to hurt him. However, he didn't show much sign of fear. "Atticus tried to stifle a smile but it didn't make it." (Lee,146). This shows that Atticus was not worried about the mob at all. Dubose, a negative, elderly woman, was another character who displayed acts of courage. Even though she knew she was dying, she had a lot of courage and showed it. Mrs. Dubose had a morphine addiction and only had a few months left to live. She was determined to break her morphine habit before she died. Jem doesn't think much of. To him, she is a bothersome neighbor. However, to Atticus she is a strong, courageous woman. Atticus called her “the bravest person I ever knew." (Lee,112). This quote shows that even though she was a very negative person, Atticus saw through her imperfections and knew she was brave. Mrs. Dubose really wanted to die free of addiction even though it would be a long and painful journey. Unfortunately, she passed a better person because of it, but left giving Jem and Scout a valuable lesson. She shows them that you can overcome obstacles, even when the seem impossible, by being
