When the suitors were around she seemed happy and interested in them but when they were not around she seemed sad, lonely and lost. He could not understand how she could entertain these suitors when they treated his house with such disrespect.
He was angry with her in this moment and called out “Mother let Phemius sing whatever he wants to sing. He knows best what the people want to hear and you will just need to find a way to deal with it”. Penelope somewhat embarrassed by her son’s outburst studied him closely now. He had that arrogant look he sometimes got when he wanted to remind her that despite being his mother, he was the master of this house in his fathers absents. She could also see his anger towards her and towards the suitors who were making a mess of the house.
Any bit of distraction from her grief that Penelope found from the suitors was gone now and so she turned abruptly, and marched back up the stairs with her handmaids not far behind. At the top of the stairs she held her head high and made her way to her room where she fell into her bed and let her sorrow sweep over her until her tears turned into
