What´s Periodontal Disease?

The American Academy of periodontology has recently claimed that half of Americans have periodontal disease. If you have recently been told that you have this disease, know that you are not alone. Half of America might have this disease, but its present at different stages. while Many Dental professionals are concerned about such high rates of this disease, they are very intrigued by and the lack of treatment among some age groups. Many of those professionals are taking it upon themselves to spread awareness outside of the dental office and inform people of their options. At this stage the plaque begins to form and accumulate around the root of the tooth, causing redness and inflamed gums. This is still under research because no exact link as to how the bacteria can cause cancer has been found. The bacteria the causes periodontal disease has been found in the areas where cancer is detected in the body. Research till this point has just provided correlations between cancer and periodontal disease. According to the American Dental Association (ADA) “men with a history of periodontal disease have a 14 percent higher risk of cancer, than those who don’t have gum disease’’, this might not sound very significant, but it’s the start of finding a way to prevent major health problems.
