The American Civil War or War of Secession was a conflict significant in the history of the United States of America, which took place between 1861 and 1865. The opposing sides were the forces of the states of the North against the newly formed the Confederate States of America, composed of eleven Southern states that proclaimed its independence. In 1859, John Brown, a supporter of abolitionism, had tried to start a rebellion of slaves in Virginia attacking an ammunition dump of the army.
