At this battle George Washington and his troops were outnumbered two to one and faced a very bad defeat. Although they were defeated, there was good to come from this battle; Washington had his men retreated up to Harlem Heights and what Washington took away from the battle was that his troops would stand no chance in large scale battles with the redcoats because they would just be out numbered. The British force, under General Burgoyne, invaded New York from Canada, and traveled all the way to Albany. The planned to continue to New York City to General Howe, which would cut the rest of the colonies off from New England. General Burgoyne tried to lead a battle against Washington and his troops at Saratoga. The battle of Saratoga was the first major win for the Americans. Washington forced Burgoyne and his troops back to Boston where they were shipped back to England.
