Reasons for World War One can be narrowed down to Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism and Nationalism or the acronym M-A-I-N.
Militarism was the belief/system that puts more importance on the use of advancing military strength. It was the use of creating more and more weaponry and strengthening the numbers in the military. Militarism was one of the causes of the war to end all wars. It was the “arms race” France, Germany and Britain were trying to outdo each other with not only their size in numbers but also weapons. Militarism made countries more power hungry. They proceeded to add more to their ranks and strengthen their arms and naval fleets. France and Germany’s arms doubled from 1870-1914. The Alliances of World War One were the triple alliance of 1882 and the Triple Entente of 1907. the triple alliance (Germany, Austria, & Italy), as well as the Ottoman Empire, was also known as the “Central Powers”. the Triple Entente (France, Britain, and Russia), was also called the “Allied Powers” These alliances allowed for larger scale war to happen. Many alliances were put together in secret, the land owned by the Allied Powers surrounded the land owned by the Central Powers, which gave them more ground to spread out their armies. The war started after Franz Ferdinand Austria’s Archduke was assassinated. He was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist group (the black hand). Austria declared war on Serbia.
