What Role Should Mr. Richards Play In Physical Education

Mr. Richards, like many middle school teachers today, understands the implements of diversity on the development of young adolescents. The diversity that Mr. Richards has observed is that his student Adam is overweight and seems to bully other students. Mr. Richards has come to realize the school does not put enough emphases on physical education or on good nutritional habits. This is an issue because in 2010 more than one-third of children and adolescents in America were considered overweight or obese (Powell, 2015).
Mr. Richards wants to help Adam and prevent any further issues from occurring. He believes Adams weight may be playing a role in his bullying of other students. I will discuss three steps I believe Mr. Richards may take to help Adam and other students that may be in crisis. …show more content…
Richards can take is to start a wellness program at the school. The school needs to focus more time on their physical education program. Since a lot of the students at this school live in a rural setting, it is hard to have extracurricular activities that promote exercise (Powell, 2015). The goal of the physical education program should be to teach the students about the benefits of exercise and teach them fun activities they can do at home to get fit.
The next step that Mr. Richards can take is to help implement a nutritional plan. This plan should include a class teaching students on proper nutrition and a balanced diet. The school should be required to remove all unhealthy food vending machines. By removing vending machine, it will help eliminate sugary drinks and snack from the students’ diets. School lunches should consist of a variety healthier food options that are well balanced. Students who bring lunches from home should also be encouraged to bring in healthier options as
