Both authors agree that God is good and can be trusted, but have differing tones when speaking about Christian’s role to play in God’s kingdom. Tolstoy takes great initiative in helping the impoverished that travel by his shop. Perhaps Williams does believe that one is still to do these acts of goodness, but boldly states “God doesn’t ‘need’ us”(12). Therefore he really does not need us to feed the hungry or clothe the naked or any of the acts that Martin accomplished. Tolstoy has a completely different view, “And turning to the woman, he said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thin house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath wetted my feet with her tears, and wiped them with her hair. Thou gavest me no kiss;
