Introduction:
Which substance melts ice the fastest? Most people might say salt because they are used to seeing salt poured on the roads in the winter, but what if there was another method that was more environmentally and financially friendly. My project will benefit the town, the government, and the people. Through a chemistry experiment, this project will test how different substances affect the melting speed of ice. The experiment will be testing the effects of salt, sugar, brine, sand, and nothing on the speed at which ice melts. If the substance poured is salt, then the ice will melt the fastest. This is because salt lowers the freezing temperature of water.

In this experiment, the DV is the speed at which ice melts. There are many different factors that can affect this, aside from the GIV of this experiment. Other factors include temperature, ice shape, surface, ice color, light color, and time of day.
SDV 1: How does the surface affect the speed of ice melting?
The surface it is found on can affect the speed at which ice melts. Depending on the surface, it can absorb or reflect heat that will later be transferred to the ice. For example, asphalt will absorb heat from the sun, therefore heat up the ice. On the other hand, grass does not absorb as much heat but does absorb the water into the soil, therefore the ice takes longer to melt.
SDV 1: Quantitative The tools used for measuring quantitative data for this experiment is a stopwatch, measuring spoon, and measuring cup. The stopwatch will be used to count the amount of time it took for the ice to melt. The measuring spoon will be used to measuring the amount of the substance being poured. Finally, the measuring cup will be used to measure the amount of water used for the ice.
