The river, is the language filmmakers added to films during that period. It helped in making the audience understand the movies smoother than they used to do during the period of silent movies. Silent movies bored people and they usually busied themselves in trying to understand the movie instead of paying attention to the techniques and styles used in it. This eased things on the directors; because they didn’t have to put an effort when directing movies like they used to do in the past.
