What Makes An American Essay

The population of the American people is around 318.9 million, but people may ask what is an American? That question might be answered by someone saying it’s someone who is born in America, but an American is not just someone who is born in America. Americans have many qualities. An American is someone who is free, generous, and patriotic; that's what makes them an American.
To start with, every American has freedom and this is a part of what makes them who they are. According to Ferrara, “Americans welcome people from all lands, all cultures, all religions, because they are not afraid….That is because they know they are free to hold to their religion, their beliefs, their history, as each of them choose.” In this statement there are many things listed out for what an American has the freedom to do and that’s because they are free to do as they please as long it’s not going to harm anyone. This freedom makes an American an American because citizens from other countries don't all have this privilege. Therefore this is one thing that defines an American.
Secondly Americans are generous. Many of Americans give what they can just to help someone in need. Ferrara reminds us that, “Americans have helped out just about every other nation in the world in their time of need.” Ferrara’s point is that Americans

Patriotic means that someone expresses devotion and support for their country. According to Cooper, “Patriotism is not about loving America when it’s easy. It’s about loving America when it’s hard.” In this statement you can see it’s not easy being patriotic but if you look throughout America’s history you will see Americans have done it for centuries. One example that pops into my head is how during world war two Americans that were at home bought bonds, farmed food, and worked in factories to help out the ones fighting for our country.
