Thoreau describes the fish around Walden Pond in great detail such as their physical appearance, behavior that includes there breeding habits and migration, and lastly the amount of fish abundant in Walden Pond. Thoreau explains the many type of fish that live in Walden Pond that would be decimated if this Pond were inhabited such as the bream, which furiously guard their nest and the pickerel who swim both “swift and wary” (Thoreau 42). Thoreau explains how the fish are “fabulous inhabitant[s] of another element, a thing heard of but not seen” (Thoreau 26) to show how they should be protected just as much as any other animal should. Thoreau pleads that since the fish own the same and inhabit the same landscape as us they should be protected, he also explains how the fish can’t petition the human’s actions therefore it is even greater reason to protect them. Thoreau pleads that the new dams being built and the extreme amount of fishing around Walden Pond is immoral because of the effects it has on the fish and since it is displacing and disrupting most of the fish’s breeding grounds. Thoreau explains that if we just cherish our environment and our surroundings we will live a much better and much more prosperous life. By restricting extreme amount of physical consumption everyday and promoting and protecting the environment and its food sources, we will live a much healthier life and promote better habits for not only our peers but also the future generations to come. Thoreau believes that if we devote ourselves to higher virtues other than just moneymaking for personal gain we can become more of an enlightened person, which directly benefits the many species that we share land with here on earth. These major steps and values are things that need to be promoted in order to help protect and promote environmental well-being. Thoreau ultimately believes that if we live a life promoting good environmental ethics we will live a much more improved and desirable
