Answer: The Jews of Sighet were still in a state of denial at this point in the story. Accepting her loss would be admitting that they were neck deep in trouble. Their optimism still rides high.
The typical human mind does not want to accept extremes of tragedy. It always wants to grasp at straws and Hope. The very basis of our human psyche is based on this. Most, if not all of us have a fundamental faith and belief that relief will come sometime and from somewhere. The people around her want to believe that everything will work out ok.
