Symbols are found everywhere. In religions, the symbols you see are so much more than what they appear. Their symbols can literally take something from “0-100, real quick” (Drake). A great example was when Christians were being persecuted for their religion so they used a fish symbol to recognize other fellow Christians. A Christian would draw half of the fish and then another Christian would draw the other half to prove they were a Christian. Henry Wadsworth and Emily Dickinson both used symbolism to their advantage when writing. Especially, Wadsworth when he used it when to write The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls and when Dickinson used symbolism to write Hope is the thing with feathers.

In the poem, it mentions, “…The traveller hastens toward the town/And the tide rises, the tide falls... Returns the traveller to the shore/And the tide rises, the tide falls” (Wadsworth 4-5, 14-15). The imagery used in those four lines shows that people will come and go, but a person will always return home. The tide moves out and unto the beach, but the tide will always return to its home, the ocean, while the traveler will come and go. The symbolism makes the story so much more than it just being about a traveler who comes to town just for a night. In Dickinson’s poem, Hope is the thing with feathers, the symbol behind it is hope.
