In the poem, it mentions, “…The traveller hastens toward the town/And the tide rises, the tide falls... Returns the traveller to the shore/And the tide rises, the tide falls” (Wadsworth 4-5, 14-15). The imagery used in those four lines shows that people will come and go, but a person will always return home. The tide moves out and unto the beach, but the tide will always return to its home, the ocean, while the traveler will come and go. The symbolism makes the story so much more than it just being about a traveler who comes to town just for a night. In Dickinson’s poem, Hope is the thing with feathers, the symbol behind it is hope.
