Cézanne’s painting of the bathers influenced the representation of the nude people during the Renaissance.The abstract nude females represent the Large Bathers, giving the painting tension and density. The scene shows figures of different shapes and sizes in a variety of forms. The triangle shape brings the viewers attention to focus on only the lake, trees and the small figures in the background. The use of blue and green tones in the background bring an overall sense of calmness and natural feel, which further helps bring his point of view on nature and the whole atmosphere. However, this mystical tone is confused by the figure swimming in the lake. The calm waters have been disturbed by the ripples as she moves and swims.
Brush stroke: Paul Cézanne liked to use a defined brush stroke, which gives that unfinished quality feel, Cezanne was not at all afraid to leave the trail of his working patterns on his paintings. In The Large Bathers, Cézanne did this to keep his nudes in predetermined spaces. The brush strokes are quick and smooth, but leaves the finishing with lines, and layers from light to dark giving the different textures.
Color palette: In The Large Bathers, Cézanne has used light and dark blues, mixed with gold and bright white colors to create a sunny yet cloudy sky that appears to reach down to small cottages. The trunks of the trees have been layered with gold, burnt umber, and oak brown tones, which were build up on each other, bringing out the texture. Each bather's skin color is complimented with different shades of browns, ranging from light browns to darks. In some of the bodies, there are hints of prussian blue and gray that are mixed into the skin, further creating the fading and transparent feel, as the painters are a part of the background/sky.
