W.E. B Du Bois was an iconic essayist and sociologist of black descent. His most notable work being those he wrote about black lives in his ‘souls of black folks’ essay collection. In this critical analysis of the lives of the Negros in America, he touches upon many themes of the 20th century in relation to the colour line problem. Some of the major themes that he analyzes include, the veil, double consciousness and hope of preserving black lives heritage.
Being of African descent I can attest that most of the themes that Du Bois talks about in his book are still present, even though not as prevalent as they were in the 20th century. There are still cases of police brutality that are racially aggravated. An example of this is the black lives matter movement that was formed a while back during the civil war. The black lives movement has been in play for a really long time, but no one really bought into their grievances until they were endorsed by Bernie sanders one of the 2016 presidential candidate. This shows one example of Du bois claims of how racial prejudice impacts people. Today the black lives matter movement is still viewed as more of a threat to the judicial system, while their goal is not to threaten the system but to try and make the police less of a threat in coloured communities. Look at the Michael brown case for example, he was choked to death without resisting arrest. Statistics show that police have killed more than a hundred un armed black people just in the year 2015.This number is alarming considering police are meant to protect the people and not the people having to protect themselves from the police
