For this analysis, the artwork I selected a Volute Krater made in Greece during the 4th century B.C.E. The artist, The Underworld Painter, uses several lines, especially in the temple made for Atlas. The horizontal and vertical lines give the temple definite shape because of the thickness and they signify that a hero who has died, is the focal point on the back of the vase. The artist also uses curved lines at the top of the vase to show the richness of detail and drive the story further. The artist also uses the pointing hands of several figures to show a psychological point; Atlas on his throne and Selene driving her chariot.…

The murals on the second floor of the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology are scaled watercolor replications of the those painted on the walls of the so-called Villa of the Mysteries in Italy. They were commissioned by Francis W. Kelsey in 1924 to preserve the amazing images of the frescoes from continuing deterioration and were re-created by Maria Barosso, an Italian artist, over the course of two years. The original images were first painted on the walls of a Roman villa outside of Pompeii and ultimately affected by the infamous eruption of Mount Vesuvius. As they were created near the beginning of the first century, what the murals depict, or why they were created is relatively unknown. There are theories, of course, but Italy today is much different than it was nearly two thousand years ago, so no one knows for certain.…

This artwork looks like it is from the Northern Renaissance and one of Albrecht Durer’s prints. Durer was an important artist from the Northern Europe and he combined the teachings of the Italian Renaissance with the practices of the Northern Europeans. This print is an example of what was produced during the Northern Renaissance, as seen in the extreme details found in the fur of the animals as well as the small patterns created on the wall from the lighting seeping through the window. There are some symbols meticulously placed within the picture like the skull near the window and the lion near the steps. The Northern Renaissance came about when several northern artists, like Durer, traveled to Italy and after studying the techniques and teachings…

Classicism is stylistic movement of art that is associated with antiquity mainly in the ancient Greco-Roman world. Dated back to the middle of the 5th century B.C., the Parthenon on the Athenian Acropolis was constructed and dedicated to the Greek goddess Athena. This magnificent structure consisted of unique components, such as the Ionic frieze, which indicated the first change in artistic style leading to classicism. In the first appearance in writing, the Parthenon means the “temple of the virgin goddess,” but this is one of very few verifiable interpretation found, which leads to the frieze’s obscurity.…

This work of art looks as though it is from the Egyptian period, most likely the New Kingdom. You can tell that this is Egyptian because of how the face is more of an oval shape and the prominent, almond shaped eyes with the winged out liner. Another detail that lead me to believe that this is a work from the Egyptians is the shape of the head piece and the design, how it is in a woven type pattern with the design going around the top and the design all over the cloak. This is most likely the works of the New Kingdom of Egypt, I say this because it looks like it was carved out of wood and the Old Kingdom used mostly limestone materials.…

Drawing focuses on a 2-dimensional surface. The sculptors drew 2-dimensional versions of their sculptures as a plan to create the work, as clarification of their work. They have drawn to the three aspects to “Seeing”: visual perception - the ability of the brain to accurately judge the shapes, relationships and proportions evident in the data that our eyes take in, visualising - our ability to recognise and organise the ‘drawing potential” of a subject, visual literacy -the ability to read and interpret the marks of the drawing itself. Giacometti’s perceptual drawing is almost an exact depiction of his sculpture, utilising line to create tone, thus transforming the image from 2-dimensional to 3-dimensional. Giacometti’s and Goldsworthy’s sculptures are very distinctive, but their drawings are very similar.…
