Book 1: With each page there is a new adventure for the reader. Brain Fola, has written and illustrated a book that is full of energy and excitement. If there was a climax, the greatest adventure to unfold during the story plot, it would have to be Dale Creek Bridge crossing. The text emphasizes the narrowness of the bridge, the heaviness of the train, and the rickety sounds from the bridge. The picture illustrates the fear the characters feel as they ponder the question, “Is this heavy train going to make it across the narrow wooden bridge?”. A picture of a gigantic bridge only further reinforces the climax of the train trip as the train riders nervously waits to cross the bridge. Only when the reader turns the page do they understand how the engineers’ keep the train on the tracks. Throughout the book, there are new sights and possible pending danger. At the begging of the book the reader is introduced to this imaginary thing called Beekle. The imaginary thing wants to meet his imaginary friends. The illustrations show Beekle looking up at the stars and patiently waiting for a child to imagine him. Then the pictures express Beekle’s strong desire to find his imaginary friend as he sets out to do the unimaginable. The illustration of a young girl calling out for Beekle’s help leaves the reader wondering if this could be Beekle’s missing friend. The text never gives the reader any indication the girl, Alice, is the long awaited friend. But, the pictures do. Finally, the reader realizes that Alice has imagined and given Beekle his own special name. The artist illustrates their friendship
