The beginning of the major turning point of the 18th century was the election between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. This election soon became between Aaron Burr and Thomas Jefferson, but in the end the Federalists refrained from voting tipping the scale in favor of Thomas Jefferson. They did this in hopes that Thomas Jefferson was the moderate of the choices. This election was huge as it was a peaceful exchange of power of two major political parties in a major nation.
