The imagery in the Masque of the Red Death, includes a Prince’s elaborate and exquisite castle among a dying and plagued land of peasants. The Prince, Prospero, has quarantined himself in his castle along with the knights and dams of the high class society. The knights, dams, and prince are trying to escape the clutches of the Red Death. His castle’s iron gates are barricaded and bolted shut to keep the disease out. After six long months in the castle, the some odd thousand peoples within have decided to have a masquerade ball to escape the foreseen doom of the plague for one night. The ball is to be had in an abbey which is extravagantly decorated with sparkling glitter, expensive gems, bountiful food, and echoing laughter. By locking themselves in the castle the knights, dams, and prince believe they have saved themselves from the plague. As the plague terrorizes through the lands, the people of the castle are living very lavishly and are ignoring the outside horrors. The people continue to live their lifestyles as they had once been before the sickness has begun. These actions express the people’s ignorance to accept their ultimate fate. When Prince Prospero runs at the Red Death with his dagger bared he is denying the truth. Death cannot be escaped because ultimately it is everyone’s last chapter in
