On May 14, 1607, the first permanent english settlement was founded. It was called Jamestown. Jamestown was surrounded by deadly marshes carrying disease filled insects. Two-thirds of the original colonists died. It became clear that Jamestown needed a leader to get them through the struggles of winter. Two men helped lead the colony to success. John Smith and John Rolfe. John Smith built a fort in 1608 and rewarded colonists with food if they worked harder. Later, John Rolf discovered a new type of tobacco that sold well in England.
