1. 38th parallel- This was an invisible latitude line that ran across Korea through the middle. Soviet soldiers accepted the Japanese surrender north of this line. The Allies did the same south of the line. Korea was divided into a Soviet-controlled side on the north, while the south was controlled by the Americans. This was not meant to be a permanent divide, but this divide still exists today. The North is still communist and basically cut off from the rest of the world, while the south has an American style government (democracy).
