How so?
Well, the presence of many sea animals, ibex, and chamois prove the influence the local environment played in the cave art. The Cosquer Cave was located a few miles from the shore in an environment of limestone hills that was home to these animals. It is no coincidence then that the artists chose to represent the local animals.
So what animals were represented in Cosquer Cave?
There were 177 animals in total. They belong to 11 different species: horses bison aurochs ibex chamois saiga antelope red deer (stags and does) megaloceros deer feline auks seals The animals most often represented are the horses—there were 63 of them.
