Egan, Timothy. New York Times Magazine, February 28, 1999 “The Persistence of Polygamy” in 2013 Annual Editions of Human Sexuality edited by Bobby Hutchinson. McGraw Hill. New York.Egan - The Persistence of Polygamy.pdf
Central Theme:
The central theme of the article “The Persistence of Polygamy” is how the practice of polygamy is not viewed as a crime to some and it is practiced more often than most would think.
What was the article about?:
Polygamy is when a man is married to multiple woman not just one. All these women all have children by him and together they all form a big family. The people that participate in this are most often born into this type of lifestyle.
Some of the kids that are born into this lifestyle

Some men have to take Viagra in order to please and be able to keep up with their younger wives.
Marriages are arranged in most cases if not every.
Thoughts and feelings:
I actually do not agree with this type of practice. How can you actually form a relationship and a bond with someone that is with as many as 27 if not more wives. This is not fair to any of the participating members. This is all just too much and not right.
It is not right for a 16 year old girl to be marring someone that is her father’s age if not older, especially her uncle or a brother-in-law. What does a 16 year old girl know about being a wife and a mother? She is not even old enough to take care of herself let alone a whole family plus extra.
I do believe that this practice is wrong, but they are definitely entitled to live their lives however they choose to. It is a good thing that Polygamist do tend to be segregated and keep to themselves. That way no one is around to judge them and to see everything that they do. As long as I do not see the wrong, I have no problem with it. I would just never consider being a part of this type of

Hodges, which states the right to freedom to marry, could be cited as a precedent for recognizing polygamous marriages. Writer Fredrik DeBoer argued the fact that in a polygamous marriage for instances in a regular two person marriage, a couple is called “husband” and “Wife”, but in a polygamous marriage you are replacing those words with “Spouse 1” and “Spouse 2”. I do agree with what cathy is saying because everyone was taught from young they would marry the opposite sex and had kids as it also states in the bible. She also had gotten a second opinion from the Slate columnist William Saletan he had argued that the key number is not ,two but one: “You commits to one person, and that person commits only to you”... The word “monogamy is derived from one not two”.…

In this documentary, The Way We Never Were, Stephanie Coontz discusses the myths and realities of marriage and families in history as well as in present day and examines the consequences of the development of marriage throughout history. Beginning with the single parent families the myth is that single parent families are only a new trend when really they’ve been around for centuries. Coontz says that at the beginning of the 19th century one parent households were common because of the extremely high death rate that plagued the nations. Similarly, step families which one would think is a recent idea has also been around since the 19th century due to the high death rate which increased the chances of remarrying and combining families. The myth that…

I believe that marriage is defined as between a man and a woman. One man, and one woman. While muslims and mormons may argue that the government is infringing on their rights by not allowing polygamy to exist in the united states. While the argument can certainly be made. Our rights, the rights set by our founding fathers, do guarantee us freedom of religion in our first amendment.…

In this paper, I will argue that in “The Cohabitation Epidemic” Neil Clark Warren does not successfully support his conclusion stating that people should be alarmed by the current situations of cohabitation epidemic between couples (Vaughn 482). The author spent a myriad of time discrediting cohabitation between couples as not the right form of trial marriage, which to me is lost in the mix. The author begins his story by explaining the social changes that have taken place during the previous decades, indicating the adverse rise of “cohabitation partner couples/ households (Vaughn 481).” Therefore, all the psychologists who possess knowledge of working with both the married and single couples must get alarmed when such cohabitation cases are…

Although, according to religionnews.com, “a federal judge declared on Dec. 13 Utah laws criminalizing polygamy are unconstitutional, ruling on a case involving the Brown family from TLC’s reality series ‘Sister Wives.’” Polygamy is recognized in over fifty countries. In these countries it is just as common as marriage between two people here in the United States, (Allison). According to "Legal Status of Polygamy," “in 2000, the United Nations Human Rights Committee considered polygamy a violation of the internationally binding International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) on the grounds that it violates the dignity of women, and recommended it be made illegal in all states.” This decision heavily influenced views on polygamy, and it further made polygamy a…

Polygamy is part of the reason the countries that allow it are usually poor. Polygamists fight very hard to get young girls back after they have escaped. They use threats, intimidation, subterfuge, and they have a legal firm on retainer that is used to manipulate the legal system. Sometimes these girls aren’t even aware they are to be married until the day of the marriage. These children are brought up in a secluded, deprived environment.…

For my first presentation, I chose to go over polygamy courtship and marriage by Kiersten Warde. Polygamy varies from your typical relationship in that it is a marriage involving one man and multiple women, like stated in the presentation, polygamy in Greek translates to “often married”. While this practice is illegal in the United States, it is still practiced in other places around the world today. Although, even in places where polygamy is accepted the man is truly only married to his first wife, the others are only bonded spiritually. Having many children is important to this practice, it is believed that the more children a man fathers the closer he is to God, which is achieved by having multiple children with multiple wives.…
