It is widely known to take place in mid-eastern countries such as the UK, Egypt and 28 African countries. The group at risk for this procedure are girls, ages ranging anywhere from birth to 12 years of age and is usually done by someone with no previous medical experience. It is seen as a transition from child to adulthood. The extent of FGM differs from each type. Type 1 is a Ciltoridectomy: the removal of the Clitoris. Type 2 is called Excision: the removal the Clitoris and removal of Labia Minora which also may include the Labia Majora.
