Personal Narrative: A Day At A Couple For Time

It was a gorgeous, but frigid Wednesday afternoon in January as I made it to Wadsworth library around two o’ clock. Checking my watch, I made sure it was two. I was meeting my best friend, Zaire for lunch and when I tell you that he’s a stickler for time, the boy’s been on time for everything since I first met him in ninth grade.
The library was quiet with patrons on the computers while some older folks were playing chess in the back corner. I scanned the spot for Zaire, but found no sight of him. Looking at my watch again, it read, 2:02p.m.
I’ll be damned. Zee’s actually late for lunch. I said to myself, wondering what they could have him doing.
It was only two minutes after, but when it came to time, Zaire was always exact. When he set a

We split a full box of donuts between us and sipped on hot chocolate. Sitting there, we stuffed our faces silently, warming up before the conversation started.
I sipped my beverage, feeling the warm of the liquid radiate through me. “So, moving been hard, huh?”
“Yeah, I’ve had a few friends help, but it’s mostly been me.”
I could hear the exhaustion in his voice causing me to frown and sulk some. I really felt horrible because I prided myself on being there for Zaire—I mean after everything we’d been through I owed him so much. It was a stressful journey moving and the only reason I didn’t help was due to the stress of my latest relationship ending. The distraction of helping Zee into his new place would have been nice. I didn’t realize how hard I was sulking until Zaire traced my frown lines with his finger.
“I’m sorry I haven’t been around to help out.”
“It’s fine. You were deal with something. Um, speaking of which, are you okay?” He wondered with a worried silence. “Or is that a stupid question?”
I managed a quick smile and that was damn-near impossible thinking about my

She didn’t have a problem with Zee’s best friend being a female, so that was a plus. The only thing that got on my nerves was whenever we were all together or when they were alone, she just had to have Zaire all to herself.
Shit, she probably stopped him from answering a phone call from his Momma. I thought inwardly.
That’s another reason I didn’t take Zee’s phone calls because I knew if Tessa was around she’d throw a hissy-fit.
I calmed with a few breaths. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to come at you like that.”
“It’s cool. You’ve got the right to be angry, sweetie. Just remember to learn from what you leave behind.”
“Alright Yoda,” I smirked, finishing my hot chocolate. “You always got something wise to say.”
“Be lucky it was wise because when you came at me and mine the smart-ass put of my brain was ready to get you out of here.”
“Yeah, whatever. Don’t forget, I know about your Momma and your Daddy.”
“Okay, you got me there.” Zaire stood up, putting his jacket on. “But since I’ve got you for a while, I want to show you something

Later in the novel, when Zeena figures out later that her pickle dish was shattered, the reader finds out how special the dish was to her. She received the pickle dish as a wedding gift from her Aunt Philura Maple, leaving the dish on top of a shelf, never getting it down “[ex]cept for spring cleaning, lift[ing] it with [her] own hands” (Wharton 69). She never brings down her dish, “not even when the minster come[s] to dinner, or [her] Aunt Martha Pierce” (Wharton 69). It is obvious that the pickle dish means so much to her that she wouldn’t use it, keeping it for storage. While yelling at both Mattie and Ethan, her “voice br[eaks] and two small tears h[a]ng from her lashless lids [that] ran slowly down her cheeks” (Wharton 68-69).…

In Ethan Frome, author Edith Wharton illustrates that archetypal images are prominent in her novel through the characters of Mattie and Zenna, who show the struggle of Ethan Frome and his hardship of a decision of picking a girl. Mattie, Ethan’s love interest, is representative of summer, hope, warmth and the love that she has for Ethan. On the contrary Zeena, Ethan’s wife, represents winter, cold, everlasting, desolation, and a only half alive state of mind and being. Both of these characters are more than meets the eyes and influential to Ethan Frome, who has both of these women as prominent characters in his life. Mattie and Zeena contradict each other’s characters in the way that Mattie brings Ethan a sense of communication as much as…

The shop door slammed as I walked over to the workbench. I laid out everything I needed to build a winning NASCAR: a wooden chassis and body, plastic wheels and a spoiler, metal axles, and a sheet of stickers. My dad had acquiesced to my begging him to take me, an enthusiastic eight-year-old car guy, to Home Depot to add to my collection of toys. I gave the instructions a cursory glance before casting them aside. The finished product seemed simple enough.…
