The European countries motivation for the colonization of Africa stems from the desire for more prosperous country through factors similar to economic exploitations, like trade and land gain. In Europe with powers like France, Germany, and Holland, countries like belgium could not expand, limiting their opportunities. First, throughout history colonies give smaller countries like belgium an opportunity to gain prosperity that they otherwise would not have in Europe. This was realized by Prince leopold the future king of Belgium. By Belgium being a smaller country, their sovereign wanted to expand their frontiers in market through gaining new land, but there was no available space. Therefore Prince leopold's motivation for colonizing africa was to make his country more prosperous. Heir to the Belgians throne and future king, Prince leopold, had a conversation where he stated that for belgium to be prosperous that would need to colonize. First, a man named Benjamin Disraeli recommended that a colony is a political transaction that strengthens the country rather that an economic advancement. By Disraeli recommending that a colony is a political power move rather than a financial one illustrates the motivations of Europeans at this time. Therefore the motivation for the colonization of africa was pearly political because of the dynastic ambition of countries government to attain more power. Archibald Philip Primrose, Lord Rosebery, British politician and foreign secretary, in 1900 wrote a letter to the london times explaining the ideal country. Primrose’s purpose for writing this letter may have been to get an article written what an ideal country does, specifically colonization. Also, for the criteria of an ideal country to fit into what Britain is like.
