When people want to enforce political correctness, it goes against a person right of freedom of speech. Enforcing political correctness causes censorship because you are unable to say the words or statements a person want to project. Political correctness could possibly be considered as a loaded weapon in the culture wars, which are in the most sensitive cases. At college universities, there is a major conflict between political correctness and free speech. “Several authorities have documented the movement towards political correctness on university campuses. This challenge to free speech has received the most attention, but it has been the least successful. For example, in two cases the Supreme Court has overturned speech codes in public universities. Indeed, the forces that have caused political correctness to receive so much attention have been the same forces that have caused its relative lack of success” (Paul, p.5). Political correctness can be a touchy issue when it comes to legal matters and issues. Being politically incorrect can offend a certain person and the person can report someone as a sign of harassment. If the person is a male that is not being politically correct with women in a professional setting, the male can be reported for sexual harassment if women find male statement inappropriate or offended by the statement. For example, if a person says a person that is handicap it is not the politically correct way to say in a professional environment. The political correctness way to say handicaps is to say a person with a disability. As a recreation major, there was a course requirement that all recreation majors have to take. The course that had to be taken is RA: 125- Diversity and inclusive practices in recreation, parks and tourism, the course was about introducing diverse populations including terminology, legislation, facilities and relationship to leisure. This course heavily emphasized on using politically correct terms due to the fact the course was based around working with people with disabilities. Being politically correct can help provide a comfortable environment because as a recreation facilitator they want people with disabilities to feel welcome in their programs and give them the opportunity to feel normal (McFarland).
