What Is My Pancit Identity

A Pancit Lifestyle
Pancit, a common Filipino dish, represents my cultural identity. There are many variations of pancit in the Filipino cuisine. Both of my parents were born in the Philippines so I have been raised around the culture my entire life. For the most part, pancit is made of majority noodles. Just like how my culture is majority Filipino. Usually extra ingredients are added to pancit like sliced meat and chopped vegetables. Those extra ingredients are like the little things that make my cultural identity different. Although my ethnicity is 100% Filipino, there are different elements that make my lifestyle and personality different from the average Filipino person. The essential elements of my culture include values which relate to respect, family, and balance.

When I was little we would have barbeques at the beach with my mom’s side of the family almost every weekend. Now that a lot of my cousins have grown up, those weekly barbeques are not a common thing anymore. Although I do not see them every weekend, my family and I are still very close. On special occasions like Thanksgiving and Christmas, we have family dinners. I also have relatives that live in other places like California and Nevada. When we go on vacations to those places or places near there, we take time to visit those relatives. Once a week, my mom, dad, brother and I go out to dinner at a restaurant. While watching the movie Crash, I was following a certain character and paying attention to his experiences. This character is Officer Tom Hansen who is played by Ryan Phillippe. I will be analyzing Hansen’s experiences while relating them back to these interpersonal communication topics. Tom Hansen is a younger white male cop who is seemingly new to the force.…

Every year on Thanksgiving break I have gone to my grandparents house to stay for the week. For me this is important because my grandparents live a good ways away and I barely get to see them. This became a tradition when I moved away from where they live because that's when our other traditions ended like on wednesdays we used to meet somewhere and eat dinner but we can’t do that any more so we thought that Thanksgiving break is a good time to go see them because we have off school and they can get off work. The whole time we are up there we laugh cook and have fun together.…

My cultural identity developed through solid principles established on a foundation of positive values, and morals. I have fond remembrances for the traditions of worship, celebration, and clean living. This is what connected me to my family is how our family connected. What I gained from family gatherings was the importance of family unity and strength for family. My parents were very Afrocentric, my father would go to “Sankofa” meetings which I never understood the significance at that time, but now aware of that Sankofa symbolizes taking from the past what is good and bringing it into the present in order to make positive progress through the benevolent use of knowledge.…

This essay will showcase these differences between our families. One of the greatest features of Thanksgiving, in my opinion, is seeing your family, especially when you don’t have the opportunity to meet them often. It is always an enjoyable experience conversing with those you don’t meet on a regular basis, your relatives in particular. This is one of the elements that can differ from family to family. For example, I celebrate it with my mom’s half of the family.…

The Philippines have been colonized by the Spaniards and the Americans for centuries, and these two cultures have had a significant impact on the Filipino culture and their identity. Martin and Nakayama note Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck research on cultural values claims that, “Values are the most deeply felt beliefs shared by a cultural group; they reflect a shared perception of what ought to be, and not what is” (p. 99). The Filipinos culture has had influences from civilization prior to the Spanish occupation, Spanish colonization, and American society. Oreiro (2014) mentions, “Unlike many others within the Pan-Asian grouping, Filipinos have the distinction of being the only groups of immigrants to come from an American colony” (p. 6). In order…
