Many people would say baseball is America's greatest pastime but I would like to argue and say that chasing the “American dream” would be the greatest and most common pastime. What is the American dream? Well, the phrase was first coined by historian James Truslow Adams in 1931 within his book called “Epic Of America” but the idea behind the phrase is as old as the states themselves. The general idea of the American dream has typically stayed the same but each decade gives it their own little spin. For example the 1890’s “American dream” involved moving to America and making enough to support your family.…

“Stupid Jobs Are Good to Relax With,” by Hal Niedzviecki and the article “The Heady Thrill of Having Nothing to Do,” by Scott Adams are two articles loosely intertwined. The article “Stupid Jobs Are Good to Relax With,” by Hal Niedzviecki reasons the idea that part-time jobs are something that we should slack off in and are there to help us pass time. While the article “The Heady Thrill of Having Nothing to Do,” by Scott Adams debates about how our most creative thoughts and ideas come from our moments of boredom, as well as how society’s modern day influences are the culprit for our lack of boredom. Both articles vaguely share a similar topic, boredom. “The Heady Thrill of Having Nothing to Do,” by Scott Adams is a more strongly written article than “Stupid Jobs Are Good to Relax With,” by Hal Niedzviecki.…

The best college students learn very quickly that the best thing that they can do is never give up, discover something new every day, work with the community as best as they can and show great respect for the learning community. They also learn that service to the community is essential and they do this by helping others and making them stronger learners. Although Bain’s book does a very good job of explaining all of these values, the one that stands out to me is that of discovery. Discovery stands out because in order to learn you must find/discover something new every day in order to be the best learner that you can be. Stories that Exemplify Discovery…

Why are you in College? “You must go to college to succeed in life.” This quote is something my parents would regularly say to me as a kid growing up. When I got to high school and realized some people actually did not intend on going to high school it blew my mind.…

To be completely honest I have mixed feelings about writing and I don’t really have any memorable experiences that made me feel this way, it is just the experiences that I have had with the subject while trying to apply it. I struggle with what to write down mostly and creativity in general and I don’t really excel at any part of it. If I were to say I “excel” at anything it would be revising my work and adding to it. At the end of the semester I hope that I have relearned some key writing elements that lack of practice has caused me to lose.…

To me, writing has always been busy work and something that teachers only used to create grades. My writing experience in high school was very limited to one category in: practice AP essays. The writing I did in class was always preparing for AP exams and was very fact based. Most essays, such as history, were only used to show that I knew the material and weren’t graded on how good the writing was. I didn’t feel like I had any freedom to stray away from the format that the AP graders expected because I didn’t want that to affect my score.…
