This causes tension for public schools that rely on attendance for state funding. Despite the controversy, statistics continue to show that homeschooled students are academically advanced and score higher on average than the pupils who attend public school (McElroy). This makes it difficult for the government to justify a need to intervene in current policy regarding homeschooling. As compared to traditional school systems, homeschooled students "G.P.A's are higher and scores on standardized tests for college admission are also higher" (Cogan). This information helps to focus on how each educational option stacks up against one another academically. The Journal of College Admission demonstrated that homeschooled students are more successful grade and retention wise at a four year college institution also. The main reason parents choose to home school their child is the concern for the public school environment, and duly coming in second is dissatisfaction with academic instruction (Non Public Education in the U.S). There are several aspects that should be taken into account before making a decision. First, a family must decide if it is financially feasible to have one parent stay home. In most households these days both parents are part of the workforce. Parents who are considering homeschooling might have to make adjustments in order to accommodate this. Another thing to consider is the actual cost of each educational option. Public school is state funded through taxes, so the only expense to parents is the supplies required by the school. Homeschooling, while it is still more affordable than a private school, does cost more on average than a public school. There are programs such as Connections Academy that combines the public school curriculum with a home based education. In addition to the curriculum, all of the necessary elements including a computer, printer, and internet access is provided free of charge for use by the student (Education). This lessens the financial burden on the parents while still utilizing the environment of home
