What is more important than the safety of our proud nation? Safety within this country has increasingly risen recently due to numerous political factors. However, it has been done the wrong way. We have been focusing on threats outside of this country as the problem. When the real problem is within our borders. The increasing number of guns have made no one safe in America and it is only going to get worse. There have been countless killings every day in the U.S. and occasionally massive slayings of innocent civilians that have nothing to do with people from other countries or other religious beliefs. If we significantly reduce the number of guns being manufactured and increase the restrictions then there will …show more content…
They all consist of people behind firearms with some sort of mental illness. A study done in 2015 found that out of 100 rampage killers, 47 of them were mentally ill. (Kopel) Thorough background checks have to be done in order to keep weapons out of the wrong hands. However, that unfortunately has not been possible due to our leaders and lawmakers. “Instead, congressional Republicans have voted to abandon an Obama-era policy that would have added about 75,000 people to the national background check database who have mental health problems that prevent them from working and managing their own affairs.” (“TIGHTEN LAWS ON GUNS, MENTALLY ILL”) Up to 75,000 people with mental disorders were not added to the national background check because of politics. The safety about the American people are brought up in every political debate for a reason. No matter where the threat comes from, we as a people just want to make sure we are safe from it. As a result of the first two topics, America will in fact become a safer country. We are one of the most violent nations because of our access to various types of weapons. So in order to become something we have never been, we have to do something we’ve never done. It’s not surprising that the United States has the highest gun ownership in the world. Study shows that out of 100 people, 89 own a gun. (“Guns In America”) That is an incredible number since in second place is Yemen with only 55 out of 100. Our history and culture of guns have molded our country into a war zone at some points in history. There have been 32 mass public shootings from 2005 to 2015 (Kessler) Some countries around the world have taken tremendous stances around guns. In the last decade, there have been over 300,000 Americans killed by firearms. In that same span of time, there have only 10,000 killed in all of Europe. (“Europe’s Braver Stance on Gun Control”) Europeans are not innocent but they have displayed what it is like to be in a culture that is almost gun free. In 2016 alone, there were 4,252 deaths in just the city of Chicago. (Rogers) Guns have allowed their to be absolutely no safe zones in our country.
