A British medical officer named Frederick Griffith was determined to find a cure for a certain bacteria that causes pneumonia in mammals. This bacterium was formally known as Streptococcus pneumonia. Griffith firmly believed in his hypothesis which was that live, nonpathogenic bacteria and the heat killed bacteria combined, and that a certain influencing factor was transferred from the heat killed cells into the living.
