What Is Dominant Culture?

1. Culture- Culture is what we create for example; technology, language, clothes, religious beliefs, art.
2. Subculture- a group of people who are set apart from the dominant culture. For example, little Italy, China Town in New York City.
3. Counterculture- A group of people who practice the opposite of the dominant culture. For example, the Amish.
4. Cultural relativism- no culture is superior to the other, allow others to believe and be judged by their own standards.
5. Ethnocentrism- superiority over other cultural values, food, beliefs and judge them based on our own. For example, in history the white race considered themselves as superior class while African Americans and Hispanics are seen inferior.
6. Xenocentrism- Means we think something foreign is better. For example, Chanel perfume is the best perfume

Part B

The ethnocentric point of view to Noni’s story is horrendous. In our culture, statutory rape and prostitution is deemed as illegal. It is absurd to believe parents could sell their under aged children in order to eat. Many child bride stories have come to light they are treated as property and garbage. This can be harsh to read but if the family doesn’t have the means to provide food and shelter to the child they should not be having any. There the government has failed them if they have to ultimately sell their children for food. This practice is immoral and inhumane and it should be banned.

The cultural relativism point of view to Noni’s story is that it is just there culture. It is a custom in countries such as Asia to give up their daughters as child brides. The poverty, lack of education and woman inequality make these decisions acceptable. For example, if Noni’s parents don’t give her up to marriage the rest of their family would starve.
