Imagine someone who doesn't understand themselves, or their past. Picture them as frightened, yet the most determined man on earth. That person is Charlie Gordon. Thirty-two year old Charlie was born with an unusually low IQ; he has endeavored his whole life trying to be just smart as everyone else. All he has ever wanted to do is to learn how to read and write. When he has the chance to participate in a new ingenious experiment to raise his IQ, he is the first one on board. As Charlie’s IQ increases he starts to understand the world around him, and throughout the book he learns many beneficial life lessons. If you happened to be rude and obscene to one another, would you want that response back? It’s important to realize that Charlie should have been treated as an equal, but instead he is neglected by his coworkers and family members. As a matter of fact, Charlie's coworkers like Frank and Joe loved to laugh at him, but they also showed animosity and enmity. Before the surgery, he referred to them as his “friends”, although he later found out it was all just a insulting antic. “Only a short time ago, I learned that people laughed at me. Now I can see that unknowingly I joined them in laughing at myself. That hurts the most.” (pg 199). Later in the novel Frank and Joe come to Charlie’s aid, but they were never there when he had needed them the most. Then again not only did Charlie's coworkers disrespect him, but as well as his family. When Charlie’s parents apprehend that he is disparate, and not like all the other children in his class they were disconcerted. Rose (Charlie’s mother) pushed him to be “normal” child, and wants him to comprehend things just as quickly as everyone else. As soon as she had given up trying and had another child, she promptly said “He's got to be sent away. I don't want him in the house anymore with her.” on page 169.
