To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a story about a trial in the 1930’s of an African-American man named Tom Robinson defended by the narrator's father, Atticus Finch, against a Caucasian family accusing Tom of rape. Throughout the story, there was a recurring theme of prejudice against African-Americans. However, this prejudice did not affect Atticus Finch’s character development because he continued to defend Tom Robinson and he told his kids not to speak about African-Americans in a derogatory manner like the kids at school did.
