Archaeology: Uncovering Us
By definition archaeology is the study of human history and prehistory through the excavation of sites, and the analysis of artifacts and other physical remains. Or in other words, the study of what makes us as humans what we are today. The anthropologists tasked with uncovering this information are known as archaeologists. The study of archaeology is used to help people today better understand what went on throughout human history. There is much that can be learned from the remains uncovered at the sites that archaeologists excavate every day. We try to gain information from the studies done on archaeological records, sites, artifacts, and features to find more information about past societies and their subsistence strategies.
Archaeologists mainly focus on archaeological records; these records are all of the material objects created and used by humans. Examples of archaeological records are portable materials known as artifacts, this includes all forms of pottery, stone tools or weapons and even left behind food remains such as the corn husks found at the sites of the abandoned houses in the video we watched in class. Subsistence strategies are the multiple ways that humans in different societies go about meeting their basic material and survival needs. If a society is using all of the crops that are growing in their land, and they know that their neighboring society is bountiful, then they might create a trade relationship or even forcefully take the land by way of war.If they are successful they then become known as an empire. Subsistence could be anything from food to clothing or even shelter. Strategy is how that culture goes about obtaining those basic human needs that they must have for
